Rolando Gómez, chef de la section de la presse et des relations extérieures du Service d'information des Nations Unies à Genève, a présidé un point de presse hybride auquel ont participé des porte-parole et des représentants du Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies aux droits de l'homme, de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, du Fonds des Nations Unies pour l'enfance et de la Commission générale des pêches pour la Méditerranée (CGPM) de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO).

Situation humanitaire à Gaza

Dr. Richard Peeperkorn, représentant de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) dans le territoire palestinien occupé, a déclaré que la situation à Gaza s'aggravait d'heure en heure, avec des bombardements intensifiés, y compris dans les régions du sud. Le nombre de personnes déplacées augmentait, et les habitants étaient désespérés et dans un état de choc permanent. Sur les 16 000 personnes tuées, plus de 60 % étaient des femmes et des enfants. Un enfant était tué toutes les dix minutes à Gaza. Nous étions proches de l'heure la plus sombre de l'humanité, et un cessez-le-feu durable était nécessaire, a souligné le Dr. Peeperkorn.

La plus grande préoccupation de l'OMS était la vulnérabilité de l'infrastructure sanitaire à Gaza, qui était paralysée. Il n'y avait presque aucun établissement de santé fonctionnel dans le nord. Ce qui s'était passé dans le nord de Gaza ne devait pas servir de modèle pour le sud, car les besoins en santé étaient en augmentation. Le Dr. Peeperkorn a parlé d'avoir été témoin de scènes d'horreur dans les hôpitaux, avec des patients au sol ne recevant pas les traitements dont ils avaient besoin, des gens criant et pleurant. Les deux principaux hôpitaux du sud étaient gravement surchargés. L'infrastructure sanitaire devait être protégée. L'hôpital européen de Gaza devait être protégé et sa capacité étendue, et plus de fournitures médicales devaient être acheminées. Il y avait environ 86 000 cas enregistrés de diarrhée, ainsi que des cas de varicelle, d'éruption cutanée et de méningite, entre autres maladies.
