Esto sigue a la ejecución el jueves por la noche en Alabama de Kenneth Eugene Smith.
“Vimos que las autoridades emitieron un comunicado diciendo que funcionó, y es un método satisfactorio de ejecución. No lo es. No lo es. Podría constituir tortura, trato inhumano, degradante en violación de los tratados, los tratados de derechos humanos que Estados Unidos ha firmado,” dijo la portavoz de la Oficina de Derechos Humanos de la ONU, Ravina Shamdasani.
Shamdasani señaló que, además de Alabama, Mississippi y Oklahoma han aprobado la ejecución por asfixia con nitrógeno, y se ha presentado un proyecto de ley en Nebraska para aprobar su uso.
“Por lo tanto, estamos muy preocupados de que esto pueda abrir la puerta a más ejecuciones. Y es por eso que sentimos la necesidad de hablar claramente de nuevo de que esto no es aceptable,” dijo en la rueda de prensa regular en Ginebra.
“Lamentamos profundamente la ejecución de Kenneth Eugene Smith en Alabama a pesar de las serias preocupaciones de que este novedoso y no probado método de asfixia por gas nitrógeno pueda constituir tortura, o trato cruel, inhumano o degradante,” Shamdasani subrayó.
“La pena de muerte es incompatible con el derecho fundamental a la vida. Instamos a todos los Estados a establecer un moratorio sobre su uso, como un paso hacia la abolición universal,” Shmadasani dijo.
