تقرير الأمم المتحدة حول حقوق الإنسان من إعداد رافينا شامداساني حول ولاية ألاباما
تتبع هذا الإعدام الذي تم يوم الخميس في ألاباما لكينيث يوجين سميث.
“رأينا أن السلطات أصدرت بيانًا يقول أنها عملت، وأنها طريقة مقبولة للإعدام. ليست كذلك. يمكن أن تكون عملية تعذيب، ومعاملة غير إنسانية ومهينة تنتهك الاتفاقيات ومعاهد حقوق الإنسان التي وقعت عليها الولايات المتحدة،” قالت المتحدثة باسم مكتب حقوق الإنسان في الأمم المتحدة رافينا شامداساني.
لاحظت شامداساني أن ولاية ميسيسيبي وأوكلاهوما وافقتا على الإعدام بواسطة الاختناق بالنيتروجين، وتم تقديم مشروع قانون في نبراسكا للموافقة على استخدامه.
“لذلك، نحن قلقون جدًا من أن هذا قد يفتح الباب أمام مزيد من عمليات الإعدام. ولهذا السبب نشعر بضرورة التحدث مرة أخرى بوضوح بأن هذا غير مقبول،” قالت في المؤتمر الصحفي العادي في جنيف.
“نحن نأسف بعمق لتنفيذ كينيث يوجين سميث في ألاباما على الرغم من القلق الجدي بأن هذه الطريقة الجديدة وغير المجربة للاختناق بغاز النيتروجين قد تكون عملية تعذيب أو معاملة قاسية أو غير إنسانية أو مهينة،” أكدت شامداساني.
“عقوبة الإعدام غير متسقة مع الحق الأساسي في الحياة. نحث جميع الدول على وضع حظر مؤقت على استخدامها، كخطوة نحو الإلغاء العالمي،” قالت شماداساني.
