Venezuela: US military intervention ‘far from victory for human rights’, makes world less safe – UN rights office
The UN rights office (OHCHR) on Tuesday expressed concern over the situation in Venezuela following the United States military operation and seizure of President Nicolás Maduro over the weekend, insisting that the move runs counter to international law and damages global security.
OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva that the operation “violates a fundamental principle of international law… it violates the UN Charter,” according to which States must not threaten or use force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State.
“Using human rights arguments as a justification for this kind of military intervention is unacceptable,” Ms. Shamdasani stressed.
“Far from being a victory for human rights, this military intervention, which is in contravention of Venezuelan sovereignty and the UN Charter, damages the architecture of international security, making every country less safe,” she insisted.
“Let us not pretend that this is an action taken in defence of human rights of anyone,” the OHCHR spokesperson said, calling on the international community to come together with one voice and make clear that this action “was in contravention of the international law that was set up by Member States”.
Ms. Shamdasani further stressed that the future of Venezuela “must be determined by the Venezuelan people alone, with full respect for their human rights, including the right to self-determination and sovereignty over their lives and their resources”.
Asked about the humanitarian situation in the country UN aid coordination office (OCHA) spokesperson Jens Laerke told reporters that a UN plan established late last year that identifies almost eight million people, or a quarter of the Venezuelan population as being in need of humanitarian assistance.
Out of those eight million, “900,000 are considered in very high categories of multisectoral need… they need food, nutrition, education, health services, basically all the things that the state of Venezuela has not been able to provide to its citizens for a number of years,” Mr. Laerke said.
The OCHA spokesperson added that Venezuela was one of the least-funded aid operations but despite challenges the UN managed to reach some two million people with aid in 2025.
