Nicaragua : Marta Hurtado, porte-parole du Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies aux droits de l'homme, déplore le décès de Brooklyn Rivera en détention par l'État
“Nous déplorons la mort en détention d'État du leader et activiste indigène Brooklyn Rivera. Nous appelons les autorités nicaraguayennes à mener une enquête rapide, impartiale et efficace sur sa mort, suite à une détention arbitraire prolongée et une disparition forcée,” a-t-elle déclaré.
“Les proches ont été informés le 30 mai que Rivera, un leader miskito éminent et président du parti dissous Yatama, était décédé après plus de 32 mois en détention d'État," a-t-elle affirmé.
“Rivera a participé au Forum permanent des Nations Unies sur les questions autochtones à New York en mai 2023, après quoi les autorités nicaraguayennes l'ont empêché de retourner au Nicaragua.”
“À son retour clandestin au Nicaragua, il a été arrêté arbitrairement en septembre 2023. Malgré les demandes, les autorités ont refusé de reconnaître son sort et son emplacement jusqu'à sa mort, ce qui équivaut à une disparition forcée,” a déclaré l'orateur.
“Le Haut-Commissaire exhorte les autorités nicaraguayennes à libérer toutes les personnes détenues arbitrairement et à veiller à ce que les installations de détention respectent pleinement les normes internationales des droits de l'homme,” a déclaré Hurtado.
