“Nous sommes profondément préoccupés par la situation au Venezuela suite à l'opération militaire américaine de ce week-end. Il est clair que l'opération a sapé un principe fondamental du droit international – que les États ne doivent pas menacer ou utiliser la force contre l'intégrité territoriale ou l'indépendance politique de tout État,” a déclaré Shamdasani.
“Les États-Unis ont justifié leur intervention en raison du bilan de longue date et épouvantable du gouvernement vénézuélien en matière de droits de l'homme, mais la responsabilité pour les violations des droits de l'homme ne peut être obtenue par une intervention militaire unilatérale en violation du droit international. Le peuple vénézuélien mérite la responsabilité à travers un processus équitable, centré sur les victimes,” a-t-elle déclaré.
“Comme cela a été clairement indiqué dans les rapports constants du Bureau des droits de l'homme de l'ONU sur la détérioration continue de la situation au Venezuela depuis environ une décennie, les droits du peuple vénézuélien ont été violés depuis trop longtemps. Nous craignons que l'instabilité actuelle et la militarisation accrue dans le pays résultant de l'intervention américaine ne fassent qu'aggraver la situation,” a déclaré Shamdasani.
“L'état d'urgence déclaré par les autorités vénézuéliennes qui est entré en vigueur samedi est particulièrement préoccupant car il autorise des restrictions sur la libre circulation des personnes, la saisie de biens nécessaires à la défense nationale, et la suspension du droit de réunion et de manifestation, entre autres mesures,” a-t-elle déclaré.
“Le Haut-Commissaire des Nations Unies aux droits de l'homme, Volker Türk, appelle les États-Unis et les autorités vénézuéliennes, ainsi que la communauté internationale, à garantir le plein respect du droit international, y compris des droits de l'homme.”
“L'avenir du Venezuela doit être déterminé par le peuple vénézuélien seul, dans le plein respect de ses droits de l'homme, y compris le droit à l'autodétermination, et la souveraineté sur leur vie et leurs ressources,” a déclaré Shamdasani.

DR Congo: Ebola outbreak continues to expand, WHO sees signs of stabilization
