Le Bureau des droits de l'homme de l'ONU a appelé vendredi à un arrêt du nombre croissant d'exécutions en Iran, comme étape vers l'abolition de la peine de mort.
« Les autorités iraniennes ont exécuté au moins 841 personnes depuis le début de l'année et jusqu'au 28 août 2025, selon les informations recueillies par le Bureau des droits de l'homme de l'ONU. L'Iran a ignoré de multiples appels à rejoindre le mouvement mondial vers l'abolition de la peine de mort, » a déclaré Ravina Shamdasani, porte-parole du Bureau des droits de l'homme de l'ONU.
« Rien qu'en juillet, les autorités iraniennes ont exécuté 110 personnes. Cela représente plus du double du nombre de personnes exécutées en juillet de l'année dernière, et suit une augmentation majeure des exécutions au cours du premier semestre 2025, » a déclaré Shamdasani aux journalistes lors du point de presse bi-hebdomadaire de l'ONU à Genève.
« Le nombre élevé d'exécutions indique un schéma systématique d'utilisation de la peine de mort comme outil d'intimidation étatique, avec un ciblage disproportionné des minorités ethniques et des migrants, » a-t-elle ajouté.
Actuellement, 11 personnes risquent une exécution imminente ; six d'entre elles sont accusées de « rébellion armée » en raison de leur appartenance présumée au groupe Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), et cinq en lien avec leur participation aux manifestations de 2022. Le 16 août 2025, la Cour suprême a confirmé la condamnation à mort de l'activiste des droits des travailleurs Sharifeh Mohammadi.
« La peine de mort est incompatible avec le droit à la vie et irréconciliable avec la dignité humaine. Elle crée un risque inacceptable d'exécuter des innocents, » a déclaré la porte-parole. « Elle ne devrait jamais être imposée pour des comportements protégés par le droit international des droits de l'homme. »
« Nous appelons le gouvernement iranien à ne pas appliquer la peine de mort contre ces personnes et d'autres condamnées à mort. Et une fois de plus, nous appelons l'Iran à imposer un moratoire sur l'application de la peine capitale, comme étape vers son abolition, » a déclaré Shamdasani.
