L'Union internationale des télécommunications (UIT) a commémoré 160 ans dédiés à connecter le monde le samedi 17 mai à Genève, Suisse, lors de la Journée mondiale annuelle des télécommunications et de la société de l'information. Lors d'un événement public à Genève, la Secrétaire générale de l'UIT, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, a déclaré : « L'UIT est l'agence des Nations Unies pour les technologies numériques. Nous collaborons à travers le système des Nations Unies, ici à Genève et dans le monde entier. Chaque fois que vous envoyez un e-mail, chaque fois que vous recevez un message, passez un appel téléphonique, utilisez vos réseaux sociaux, c'est l'UIT en action.» Depuis sa fondation le 17 mai 1865, l'UIT a été à l'avant-garde de la technologie pour faire progresser l'innovation, le multilatéralisme, la sécurité et la croissance. L'UIT œuvre pour un monde où chacun, partout, peut bénéficier de la technologie en gérant l'utilisation internationale du spectre des fréquences radio et des orbites satellitaires, en développant des normes pour faire progresser la technologie – telles que l'intelligence artificielle et l'informatique quantique – et en travaillant à connecter les 2,6 milliards de personnes dans le monde qui sont encore hors ligne. « Aujourd'hui, nous célébrons l'héritage de ceux qui nous ont précédés, des pionniers qui voyaient les communications non pas comme un privilège mais comme un facilitateur fondamental pour le progrès, pour la paix et pour le développement. Réengageons-nous à la coopération et à la mission qui nous a guidés pendant 160 ans – cette mission de connecter le monde.» a déclaré Bogdan-Martin.
