Bi-Weekly Press Briefing: Ukraine - Soledar Aid Convoy - OCHA

First UN Humanitarian Convoy Reaches Areas Close to Soledar in Eastern Ukraine

The U.N. office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, announced a first inter-agency humanitarian convoy reached Ukrainian government-controlled areas close to embattled Soledar Friday morning in Donetsk Oblast. Soledar has seen some of the fiercest fighting in eastern Ukraine in recent weeks.

"Our colleagues in Ukraine have just reached government-controlled areas close to Soledar in eastern Donetsk Oblast," said Jens Laerke, OCHA spokesperson in Friday’s press briefing in Geneva.

The three-truck humanitarian convoy is bringing in “food, water, hygiene kits, medicines and other medical supplies to support over 800 people who remain in communities surrounding Soledar,” Mr. Laerke added. The convoy departed from Dnipro.

More convoys are expected in the coming days. OCHA Spokesperson said that the UN and its partners are striving to increase inter-agency relief operations to areas close to the frontlines in Ukraine, where needs are acute.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk on 29 May called for more robust measures by both states and tech companies to make online platforms safer for children, insisting on effective regulation, oversight and accountability. The digital world that connects children to learning, community and creativity also expose them to real risks, to their safety, to their privacy, and to their well-being.
