في أول بيان علني لها للصحفيين في الأمم المتحدة في جنيف، أكدت الرئيسة الجديدة للطقس في الأمم المتحدة، البروفيسورة سيليست ساولو، اليوم (16 يناير) أن إحدى أولويات إدارتها ستكون تعزيز أنظمة الإنذار المبكر التي يمكنها التنبؤ بموعد ومكان حدوث الأحداث الجوية المتطرفة. مع تزايد الكوارث الطبيعية بسبب التغير المناخي الناجم عن الأنشطة البشرية، زادت الحاجة إلى أنظمة الإنذار المبكر.
التكيف مع التغير المناخي ليس خيارًا بل ضرورة أساسية، قالت الأمينة العامة الجديدة للمنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية (WMO) في ملاحظاتها التمهيدية في مؤتمر صحفي. “إنه يتعلق ببناء مجتمعات قادرة على الصمود، خاصة في المناطق الأكثر ضعفًا، قادرة على مقاومة والتعافي من الكوارث المتعلقة بالمناخ.”
وأضافت أن “أنظمة الإنذار المبكر ستكون المحور الرئيسي في تقليل مخاطر الكوارث، وتحويل التهديدات إلى فرص للتنمية المستدامة. تحت قيادتي، سنعزز أنظمة الإنذار المبكر، ونحسن الوصول إلى البيانات، ونجعل العلم والمعلومات المنقذة للحياة في الوقت المناسب متاحة للجميع.”
التأكد من أن “نحن لسنا مجرد مراقبين، نحن مهندسو مستقبل مستدام،” قالت البروفيسورة ساولو أن “على مدار السنوات القادمة، لدينا فرصة وواجب وإمكانية لتشكيل السرد حول العمل المناخي. هذا يتعلق بتمكين الدول، وتعزيز الشمولية، وخلق مسارات مستدامة لازدهار مشترك.”
في نهاية ولايتها، تود البروفيسورة ساولو أن يتم تقييمها بناءً على تنفيذ المهام المشتركة التي حققتها للمنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية.
“نحن نتشارك فهمًا مشتركًا لما نحتاجه، والقضايا وكيف يمكننا التنفيذ، والتنفيذ هو بالنسبة لي الجانب الحاسم في كل ما نقوم به. إذا فشلنا في التنفيذ، سنكون قد فشلنا، أود أن أقول، العالم. وهنا ستكون قوتي. ستكون مركزة على التنفيذ وتنفيذ القرارات التي اتخذتها دولنا الأعضاء.”
ردًا على سؤال صحفي حول دورها كأول أمينة عامة للمنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية، قالت البروفيسورة ساولو أن “الأمر ليس فقط عن النساء، أود أن أقول إنه يتعلق بالتنوع ولدينا طرق مختلفة في التفكير، في المشكلات، في القضايا وفي إيجاد الحلول. لا أقول إنه بالضرورة أفضل. لكنني أعتقد أنه مختلف، وأنا، على سبيل المثال، أبرزت بالنسبة لي، مدى أهمية الأسرة. بالنسبة لي، إنها لبنة أساسية، شيء يدفعني إلى الأمام لأنني أفكر في الأجيال الجديدة طوال الوقت. لا أستطيع أن أفعل شيئًا دون التفكير في التأثير على الأجيال المستقبلية.”
