Jeremy Laurence, porte-parole de l'ONU pour les droits de l'homme, parle du Cameroun
« À l'approche de l'élection présidentielle en octobre, les restrictions croissantes sur l'espace civique et démocratique au Cameroun suscitent de sérieuses préoccupations quant à savoir si les électeurs peuvent librement exprimer leur volonté, » a déclaré Laurence.
« Nous appelons aujourd'hui le gouvernement du Cameroun à garantir un environnement propice à un vote libre, transparent, inclusif et authentique. L'accès égal à la participation aux processus électoraux pour tous les Camerounais est absolument essentiel, » a-t-il déclaré.
« Plusieurs rassemblements ont été interdits au milieu de restrictions croissantes sur les activités des partis politiques d'opposition à l'approche de l'élection. Il y a également eu des préoccupations concernant l'exclusion de certaines figures politiques de la course et des irrégularités dans l'enregistrement des électeurs.
Récemment, une interview télévisée en direct avec une figure politique a été interrompue par les forces de sécurité, » a déclaré Laurence.
« Ces développements font suite à la suspension de trois organisations de la société civile et à l'interdiction de deux autres en décembre dernier, ainsi qu'aux restrictions imposées sur les opérations et le financement de certains groupes de la société civile, » a déclaré l'orateur.
Le Haut-Commissaire Volker Türk exhorte les autorités camerounaises à aborder rapidement toute mesure pouvant priver de leurs droits certaines parties de la société camerounaise, et à prendre des mesures significatives pour lutter contre la montée des discours de haine, de la désinformation et de l'incitation à la violence, tant en ligne que hors ligne, conformément au droit international des droits de l'homme.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk on Thursday briefed the Human Rights Council in Geneva on the human rights situation in Sudan: “Nearly three years of brutal conflict have almost turned Sudan into a land of despair. The report I am presenting today is yet another chapter in the chronicle of cruelty. It outlines clear, ongoing patterns of violence against civilians, including killings, rape, and torture. As the fighting has intensified, violations of international law by all parties to the conflict have surged, while accountability has remained practically absent,” he said.
