Le Bureau des droits de l'homme de l'ONU a déclaré vendredi que la famine déclarée dans le Gouvernorat de Gaza par la Classification Intégrée de la Sécurité Alimentaire (IPC) était le « résultat direct des actions menées par le gouvernement israélien ».
« Il a illégalement restreint l'entrée et la distribution de l'aide humanitaire et d'autres biens nécessaires à la survie de la population civile dans la bande de Gaza, » a déclaré Jeremy Laurence, orateur pour le Bureau.
« Nous avons déjà constaté des décès dus à la famine et à la malnutrition à travers la bande. L'armée israélienne a détruit des infrastructures civiles critiques et presque toutes les terres agricoles, interdit la pêche, et déplacé de force la population – tous des facteurs de cette famine, » a-t-il dit aux journalistes lors du point de presse bi-hebdomadaire de l'ONU à Genève. « Utiliser la famine comme méthode de guerre est un crime de guerre, et les décès qui en résultent peuvent également constituer le crime de guerre de meurtre intentionnel. »
Laurence a déclaré que les autorités israéliennes « doivent prendre des mesures immédiates pour mettre fin à la famine dans le Gouvernorat de Gaza et prévenir de nouvelles pertes de vies à travers la bande de Gaza ».
« Elles doivent garantir l'entrée immédiate de l'aide humanitaire en quantités suffisantes, et un accès total aux organisations humanitaires de l'ONU et autres, » a-t-il dit.
