Après 10 jours de négociations ici à l'ONU Genève, les discussions du Comité Intergouvernemental de Négociation (CIN) pour développer un instrument juridiquement contraignant à l'échelle internationale sur la pollution plastique, y compris dans le milieu marin, ont été ajournées tôt le 15 août. Malgré un engagement intensif, les membres du Comité n'ont pas pu parvenir à un consensus lors de cette session. En regardant vers l'avenir, le Comité a convenu de reprendre les négociations lors de « la troisième partie de la cinquième session (ou CIN-5.3 en abrégé) » à une date ultérieure qui sera annoncée. La réunion s'est ajournée avec un désir clairement exprimé par les États membres de poursuivre le processus, reconnaissant la différence significative de points de vue entre les États.
