Ravina Shamdasani, organisation des droits de l'homme de l'ONU, à l'occasion de l'ouverture de sa mission au Bangladesh
« Le Bureau des droits de l'homme de l'ONU et le gouvernement du Bangladesh ont signé cette semaine un protocole d'accord de trois ans pour ouvrir une mission dans le pays afin de soutenir la promotion et la protection des droits de l'homme, » a déclaré Shamdasani lors du point de presse bi-hebdomadaire de l'ONU à Genève.
Le protocole a été signé par le Haut-Commissaire des Nations Unies aux droits de l'homme, Volker Türk, et Asad Alam Siam, Secrétaire aux Affaires étrangères, au nom du gouvernement de la République populaire du Bangladesh.
« Depuis août dernier, comme vous le savez, l'engagement de notre bureau avec le Bangladesh a considérablement augmenté. Nous avons travaillé avec divers acteurs pour faire avancer les réformes des droits de l'homme et mener une enquête approfondie sur la répression meurtrière des manifestations de masse, » a-t-elle déclaré.
« La signature de ce protocole envoie un message important de l'engagement du pays envers les droits de l'homme en tant que pierre angulaire de la transition. Cela permettra à notre bureau de mieux soutenir la mise en œuvre des recommandations formulées dans notre rapport d'enquête, ainsi que de s'engager directement sur le terrain avec le gouvernement, la société civile et d'autres acteurs avec notre expertise et notre assistance sur les réformes fondamentales que le Bangladesh entreprend à l'avenir, » a-t-elle ajouté.
La porte-parole a déclaré que la nouvelle mission offrirait une formation et une assistance technique aux autorités dans divers domaines, afin de respecter les engagements nationaux et internationaux du pays en matière de droits de l'homme, ainsi que de renforcer les capacités des institutions gouvernementales et des acteurs de la société civile.
