« Nous sommes profondément troublés par les meurtres d'hier d'au moins 10 personnes, ainsi que par les pillages et la destruction de biens au Kenya alors que la police et d'autres forces de sécurité ont répondu à des manifestations violentes dans la capitale Nairobi et au moins 16 autres comtés. Des munitions létales, des balles en caoutchouc, des gaz lacrymogènes et des canons à eau ont été utilisés,» a déclaré Shamdasani.
La police a rapporté qu'au moins 11 personnes ont été tuées, 52 policiers blessés, et que 567 arrestations ont été effectuées. La Commission nationale des droits de l'homme du Kenya a signalé au moins 10 décès, 29 blessés, 37 arrestations et deux enlèvements. Nous avons également reçu des rapports de pillages et de dommages à des biens publics et privés par des individus non identifiés à plusieurs endroits.
« Il est très préoccupant que ces derniers incidents surviennent à peine deux semaines après que 15 manifestants auraient été tués et beaucoup d'autres blessés à Nairobi et dans d'autres parties du Kenya le 25 juin. Le Haut-Commissaire des Nations Unies aux droits de l'homme, Volker Türk, renouvelle son appel au calme et à la retenue, et au plein respect des libertés d'expression, d'association et de réunion pacifique. Il est essentiel que les griefs légitimes à l'origine de ces manifestations soient traités,» a déclaré l'Orateur des droits de l'homme de l'ONU.
« Nous notons que la police a annoncé une enquête sur les incidents antérieurs. Le Haut-Commissaire réitère son appel à ce que tous les meurtres signalés et autres violations et abus présumés du droit international des droits de l'homme, y compris en ce qui concerne l'usage de la force, soient rapidement, minutieusement, indépendamment et de manière transparente enquêtés. Les responsables doivent être tenus pour responsables,» a-t-elle déclaré.
Le Bureau des droits de l'homme de l'ONU est prêt à soutenir les autorités kenyanes dans la gestion de ces défis, y compris dans les enquêtes.

DR Congo: Ebola outbreak continues to expand, WHO sees signs of stabilization
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), UN health teams and partners are still racing to contain the rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak, despite ongoing insecurity in eastern areas where the virus has taken hold.
