SOUNDBITE (English) — Elizabeth Throssell, Spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: “We raised our concerns about the situation in light of the disturbing video evidence that emerged this week. We requested more information and clarification about Sheikha Latifa’s current situation. Just to stress, this is a standard role of our Office to seek clarification from the concerned Government on individual cases within our mandate, that includes cases for whatever reason that have attracted wider focus”.

We look forward to receiving and considering this response and in the meantime, of course, we will continue to monitor and assess the situation closely”.

Two months ago, and that was in December 2020, the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances reported that – I quote -- it “decided to clarify the case of Sheikha Latifa Mohammed Al Maktoum, who is reportedly being held in incommunicado detention at her family home in Dubai”.

Following last night’s Israeli strikes in Gaza, Thameen Al-Kheetan, Spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, made the following comment at the bi-weekly news briefing in Geneva: “Weare horrified by last night’s Israeli airstrikes and shelling in Gaza, which killed hundreds, according to the Ministry of Health in the strip. This will add tragedy onto tragedy.”
