The UN Human Rights Council has adopted on Wednesday a resolution on “the alarming rise in premeditated and public acts of religious hatred as manifested by the recurrent desecration of the Holy Quran in some European and other countries” with 28 votes in favor, 12 votes against and seven abstentions.
The draft resolution was discussed during an urgent debate on 11 July at the top human rights body.
The urgent debate was convened per an official request submitted by Pakistan on behalf of member states of the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) describing the burning of the Koran in Stockholm last month as “offensive, disrespectful and a clear act of provocation” that incites hatred and constitutes a human rights violation.
This was the 9th urgent debate of the Human Rights Council since its creation in 2006.
