UNSMIL: Meeting of the 5+5 Libyan Joint Military Commission in Geneva - 19 October 2020

The fourth round of the JMC talks began this morning under the guidance of Ms. Stephanie Williams, Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General )(ASRSG) and Head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The launching of this round of talks is marked by in person meetings between the delegations of the two parties to the conflict in Libya. The meeting began with the playing of the Libyan national anthem, followed by opening remarks by the ASRSG.

The JMC 5+5 talks will build on previous deliberations and on the recommendations that emerged from the meeting held in Hurghada, Egypt, from 28 to 30 September.

The United Nations urges a complete stand-down of all military maneuvers and reinforcements to enable an agreement on a lasting ceasefire, including a demilitarized zone in central Libya, as well as to create the space for constructive political discussions.

Full details of UNSMIL’s most recent statement on the resumption of political and military talks available here.

Syria 13 years of war OSE Syria - UNHCR ENG FRA

Syria faces its highest humanitarian crisis with over 16.7 million people in need of aid after 13 years of conflict. The ongoing conflict has devastated the country's infrastructure, leaving many without basic services and plunging over 90 percent of Syrians into poverty. The lack of funding risks pushing more children into labor and accentuating gender-based violence, early marriages, and school dropouts.
